Script Consulting Services
I can read and assess your script, providing a detailed 3-5 page report to help you understand which elements are working well and which need further development. I will also reply to any follow-up questions via e-mail. Having worked with first time writers to some of the most experienced professionals in the industry, I am sensitive to people’s individual needs as well as identifying a clear sense of direction to help move your script forward. I can also offer a one-to-one hour long video call to discuss the script assessment and explore further avenues for you to develop your idea.
If you’d like to spend more time working with me on a project as a script consultant or script editor, I can offer mentoring and development services over six, nine or twelve months. This involves me reading and assessing your work and feeding back to you on a one hour video call once a month. Before starting the process I offer a free 30 min video call so that you can give me a bit of context about the project (or projects) and decide if you want to go ahead with a mentoring package. If you would like more support than a single hour a month, I can offer further hours at discounted rates. We can discuss the frequency and timings of these calls tailoring the process to your needs.
I will also be offering group webinars and masterclasses covering different aspects of working in the TV industry. This is an opportunity for you to dive a bit deeper into the nuts and bolts of how this dynamic and fast-changing industry actually works.
Frequently Asked Questions
Please contact me at ben@scenebyscenescriptconsultant.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
1. What does a Script Consultant actually do?
A script consultant reads your screenplay or TV pilot and provides detailed, actionable written notes covering story structure, character, dialogue, pacing and scene-by-scene analysis. As your script’s personal trainer I give honest, constructive feedback to help your story hit its full potential – whether you’re stuck in Act 2 or polishing a final draft.
2. What kinds of scripts do you work on?
Scene by Scene accepts feature films, TV pilots and limited series across all genres. I’m open to left-field and unconventional projects – if you’ve written it, I’ll read it and I’ll always work to help you achieve the best version of your project.
3. Do I need to be an experienced writer to work with you?
No – script consultancy is suitable for writers at every level, from complete beginners to experienced screenwriters. Feedback is tailored to you, not just the page. First time writers receive step-by-step guidance, while experienced writers can expect a deeper, more rigorous development process.
4. What do I actually get when I hire you?
You will receive a full written script report covering story structure, pacing, character, dialogue and any other areas requiring attention. An optional follow-up Zoom call is available for a fee, giving you the chance to walk through the notes together and ask questions directly.
5. How quickly will I receive my script notes?
Script notes are typically delivered within 7-10 business days. Turnaround is dependent on current workload, and you will be kept updated on timings from the moment you submit your script.
6. Is my script protected when I send it to you?
Yes – all scripts submitted to Scene by Scene are treated as strictly confidential. Your ideas and intellectual property are safe and will never be shared with third parties.
7. What is the difference between a script coverage and script mentoring?
Script coverage is a focused assessment of a single draft – you receive detailed notes and clear suggestions for improvement. Script mentoring is a longer-term, in-depth process involving ongoing feedback, development strategy and step-by-step guidance designed to take your writing to a professional level.
8. What does a typical script mentoring package include?
A script mentoring package typically includes an initial script or project review, one-to-one online feedback sessions, step-by-step rewriting guidance, and practical exercises tailored to your individual writing style and goals.
9. Can you guarantee my script will sell?
No script consultant can guarantee a sale – anyone who claims otherwise should be avoided. What Scene by Scene can guarantee is honest, experienced feedback from a consultant with 20+ years in UK television and film, giving your script the strongest possible foundation for submission to contests, producers and agents.
10. Great, how do I get started?
Easy. Head over to the Contact and Rates pages, pick what you need, and send your script or treatment as a PDF to ben@scenebyscenescriptconsultant.com. Do feel free to email me first if you have any specific questions or queries. Once we’re set, I’ll confirm the timeline and we’ll get to work.
11. How much does script consultancy cost in the UK?
Script consultancy fees in the UK vary depending on the service. At Scene by Scene, script assessments start at £180, with mentoring packages available on a monthly basis. Full pricing is available on the Rates page.
